We build open-source, privacy-preserving technologies for secure person matching and identity resolution — so your health records and personal data stay yours.
Our Mission
Every person deserves control over their own identity data. Today, fragmented health records and insecure matching systems put personal information at risk — leading to medical errors, privacy breaches, and eroded trust.
Portobello develops open-source technologies that enable accurate, privacy-preserving person matching without exposing sensitive personal information. Our tools use advanced cryptographic techniques like tokenization and secure hashing to resolve identities across systems — without ever sharing raw PII.
We believe this infrastructure should be transparent, auditable, and available to everyone. That's why our core projects are open source.
Our Projects
A person matching specification and reference implementation. Search for nodes in a network that have records for a person without revealing their demographic information.
View on GitHub →A self-sovereign ID specification that allows users to maintain their own independent issuer of ID tokens and public signing keys without revealing demographic information.
View on GitHub →A specification defining a format for describing legal documents such as contracts or witness records that convey authorization and endorsement relationships.
View on GitHub →How It Works
Personal identifiers are transformed into secure, irreversible tokens using cryptographic hashing. Raw PII never leaves the source system.
Tokens are compared across systems using probabilistic and deterministic algorithms. Identity resolution happens on encrypted data — never on raw records.
Verified matches create secure linkages between records. Health systems get complete patient views while individuals retain full control over their data.
Whether you're a health system, a developer, or an organization that cares about privacy — there's a place for you in our community.
